Wines with history for winelovers of tradition.
- In Navarra we can find 28 wineries to visit.
- 21 towns here have wineries.
Navarre is an ideal place to enjoy wine tourism, with 28 wineries offering wine tourism experiences related to the world of wine. These wineries are spread over 21 towns, the most important of which is Olite/Erriberri. The wine route of this area is, of course, the wine route of Navarre, and for the moment, there are no wineries from other routes in this province.
Navarra has always been known for its rosé wines, but this panorama has changed substantially in recent times, and here we can even taste Pago wines (D.O. Pago), the highest recognition for the quality of a wine in Spain.
The history of wine in Navarre dates back to the 1st century, although it was the religious orders of the Middle Ages, the Cistercians and Benedictines, who promoted the cultivation of wine in this area (and in other parts of the rest of the peninsula).
Navarre is usually divided into the following sub-zones, namely: Valdizarbe, Tierra Estella, Ribera Alta, Baja Montaña and Ribera Baja.
Generally speaking, vineyards tend to grow on limestone soils, although this can vary greatly depending on the area.
In addition to the Navarre wine route, this province is also crossed by routes of general tourist interest, such as the Royal Route of the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela or the Ribera del Ebro route.
In Ledea and Lekunberri they celebrate wine day, and one of the best-known popular festivals is the day of the cardoon in Peralta.
The Grape Harvest Festival usually takes place around 1 September. It is organised by the Navarre wine brotherhood and one of its star activities is wine tasting for young people, with the aim of introducing the new generations to a taste for this delicacy of Mediterranean culture. There are also wine competitions and very interesting gastronomic proposals. Normally, within the celebration, which spans several days, the central day is Sunday, when approximately 30 wineries offer their wines in the Plaza de Carlos III, the nobleman's square. There is also a photographic competition.
You can also find other grape harvest festivals, such as the one in Corella, if you fancy something more local.
