The Ribera del Duero Wine Route passes through the following provinces: Burgos, with 35 wineries, Valladolid, with 23 wineries, Soria, with 2 wineries and Segovia, with 1 winery. In it, we can find wineries with visits in 29 localities. The town of Peñafiel, with 7 wineries, is the one with the largest number of wineries to visit.
On this route you will taste wines that have had great international success, very popular among winelovers in the USA, Germany and England. In these countries, Ribera del Duero wines occupy the top positions among the wines from our beloved country that are sold there. The Ribera del Duero route is accompanied by the river that bears the same name and extends mainly through the south of Burgos. In fact, 75% of the vineyards are located in this province of Castilla y León. The first written records of wine production in this wine region date back to the 16th century, although it is believed that this elixir was already being produced in the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos. In the 16th century, Aranda de Duero was a major center of wine production. As in the rest of the areas of the peninsula, the phylloxera of the 19th century left a very affected vineyard, and after it, they focused mainly on the creation of claret wines, leaving the red in a very secondary place. In 1864 the Vega Sicilia winery was founded and in 1903, Torremilanos, which gave a new impetus to the appellation, and in 1927 the Peñafiel cooperative was founded, which would later give rise to the Protos brand, and which was the first winery to use the Ribera del Duero labels on its bottles. During the 1980s, a process of technological modernization took place in the way of working in the winery; claret lost its prominence and other wines, especially white wines, made from the white Albillo grape, entered the market. The red grapes allowed in the D.O. are Tinta del País and Garnacha. As for white grapes, in addition to Albillo, we have Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot. The way of cultivating wine in this area has common characteristics with the winemaking of Bordeaux, France. Moreover, it does not shy away from innovations and alternative worlds, as shown by the garage wines, and the success of Pingus. In case you did not know, the success of Ribera del Duero comes because in 1988 Parker gave a Pesquera 93 points out of 100 and this was the starting signal for the wines of this appellation.
The Ribera del Duero route is one of the best known and most visited routes by wine tourists in our country and the world. It offers a wide variety of activities, and we strongly recommend that you come for a weekend to visit some of its wineries, as here there is a varied wine tourism for all tastes.
