In the province of Badajoz you will find about twenty wineries open to the public to visit and taste their wines. These wineries are spread over 13 locations, of which Almendralejo is the wine tourism destination with the highest density of open wineries in its territory.
Badajoz is also home to a section of the Silver Route, the Way of St. James and the Ribera del Guadiana wine route.
The Badajoz wine appellation of origin is divided into six zones, namely: Tierra de Barros, Ribera Alta, Ribera Baja, Cañamero and Montánchez.
In white wines, the native grape varieties are Cayetana, Pardina and Eva or Beba de los Santos. These grapes are usually blended with a majority grape such as Macabeo. The result of the combination are young whites that are usually well known for their freshness and fruity flavor.
As for the red wines, the most frequent grapes for their production are usually Cencibel or Cenzibel (also called Tempranillo) and Garnacha, although the Tempranillo grape is the most representative of the area.

Extremadura's gastronomy has its own personality. Famous for its sausages, its hams are a real delicacy of the gods, especially the Iberian ham with designation of origin Dehesa de Extremadura. You cannot leave Badajoz without indulging in this great little gastronomic treat accompanied by local wine or the famous torta de La Serena cheese.
The most important wine festivals are the harvest festivals of Villa Franca de los Barros and also those of Almendralejo. Although its most famous festivals are the Chanfaina festival, in Fuente de Canto, and the Garbanzá, in Zafra.
Those who want to combine wine tourism with nature tourism can visit two protected natural areas of great beauty such as La sierra Grande de Hornachos and Los humedales de la Albuera, which celebrates its own Nature Festival.
