Hormilleja is a Spanish municipality located in the autonomous community of La Rioja, in northern Spain. It is a small town, but has a number of tourist attractions, as well as a rich gastronomy and wines.
As far as gastronomy is concerned, in Hormilleja you can find typical dishes from La Rioja cuisine, such as Rioja-style potatoes, cod in pil-pil sauce or garlic mushrooms. It is also advisable to try the local cured meats and artisan cheeses, as well as traditional desserts such as fried milk or almond tart.
As for the wines, Hormilleja is located in the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin area, so it is possible to taste high quality wines from the region. The Tempranillo grape is the most common variety in Rioja, although other varieties such as Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano are also grown.
Moreover, Hormilleja is located in an area surrounded by vineyards and wineries, so it is possible to go on guided tours and wine tastings in the region. In the vicinity of Hormilleja is the famous monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, an important cultural centre of the Middle Ages and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
