Portuguese wine aged in clay amphorae.Adega José de Sousa winery is in the wine region area of Alentejo
After the acquisition, in 1986, of the Casa Agrícola José de Sousa Rosado Fernandes, of which Monte da Ribeira is part, José Maria da Fonseca realized the old dream of being able to produce wine in the Alentejo on a property loaded with prestige and history (wine has been produced here since at least 1878), using traditional winemaking techniques.
It is here, in the center of Reguengos de Monsaraz, where you can visit a winery unique in the world, where, in addition to the José de Sousa, the José de Sousa Mayor and the high-end J de José de Sousa, the Montado brand is also produced.
Keeping alive a tradition started by the Romans more than 2000 years ago, the José de Sousa winery is equipped with 114 clay amphorae, an ancestral and very rare fermentation method. In addition to the traditional cellar, located below ground level, with the amphorae and two presses for pressing, you will also see the modern cellar, with 44 stainless steel tanks and all the indispensable technology for the vinification of reds and whites. All this makes this the ideal place to witness the combination of innovation and tradition, and learn a little more about exceptional wines.
