Located in the south of the province of Cordoba, this town is known for the Cerro del Castillo archaeological site. In Roman times, it was called Ipagrum, has 13,000 inhabitants and lives mainly from ceramics and agriculture, with wine, oil and cereals being its most important raw materials. Although few people know it, this town is proud to have among its illustrious figures the first woman marine in Spain, Ana María Soto.
Its gastronomy is usually accompanied by Montilla-Moriles wines. The most typical dish in Aguilar is 'las joecas' or potatoes in sauce, and for dessert, 'gachas de mosto', from the Caliphate period. If you have a sweet tooth, you will be in one of your future favourite places, as Aguilar de la Frontera has many confectioners' shops.
Very important for the winelover or wine tourist is its famous wine event La Cata Popular, which used to be held in the town square, the Plaza de San José, in July; but now, due to its great success, it is held on 1 November in the fairgrounds, where more than 2500 people have come to attend, who, during an entertaining evening, enjoy the tasting guided by an expert, paired with good local meats and accompanied by a band.
