The current stud farm has its origins in the late 18th century, at Herdade da Apostiça near Sesimbra. In 1848, it was transferred to Quinta da Lagoalva by the 2nd Duke of Palmela, Domingos de Sousa Holstein. This property was inherited from his wife, Maria Luísa Noronha de Sampayo, Countess of Póvoa, and this is the year of the first records of the Coudelaria da Quinta da Lagoalva.
Its major promoter was the 4th Duke, also Marquis of Faial, Luís Borges Coutinho de Medeiros, who added to the stud of the house a group of twenty-four mares purchased from the stud farm of the Duke of Toledo, a title used by King Alfonso XIII of Spain, in order to breed horses with a commercial sense.
He was succeeded by the Marchioness of Tancos, Maria José de Souza e Holstein Beck, his daughter. Upon her death, the stud farm passed to her niece, Isabel Juliana de Sousa e Holstein Beck Campilho, daughter of the 5th Duke of Palmela.
By the end of the 19th century, the mares benefited from stallions from the National Stud Farm. Later, breeders from the Veiga and Andrade stud farms were used.
More recently, semen from competitive animals in the Dressage discipline has been utilized.
