Winemaking since the 14th century.Quinta da Atela winery is in the wine region area of Tejos
Quinta da Atela was founded in 1346 by the Counts of Ourém and was donated to the Convento da Graça de Santarém of the Agostinhos Calçados order, at that time still known as Quinta da Goucha.
The history of Quinta da Atela in Alpiarça dates back to the 14th century, specifically to the year 1346, when its name was still Quinta da Goucha e Atela, and its owner was D. Afonso Telo de Menezes, Count of Ourém and Barcelos, and son-in-law of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira. Later, the property was donated to a religious order, the Convento da Graça de Santarém of the Agostinhos Calçados. In the 20th century, the estate was purchased by Isidoro Maria de Oliveira, founder of Salsichas Izidoro. After April 25, 1974, it was occupied for a decade, after which it was returned to the original owners, though a significant part remained with the agricultural cooperative.
In 2017, Quinta da Atela began a new phase that culminated in the project we know today: it was acquired by the current owners, the entrepreneurial couple Anabela Tereso and Fernando Vicente, administrators of Valgrupo, a major holding in the agro-livestock sector. With a completely renewed identity, driven by Anabela, the tireless matriarch of the family, the estate has seen the recovery of all its buildings and spaces, including the main house, and a complete overhaul of its wine range.
Located on the southern bank of the Tagus River, the estate covers a total of 600 hectares, of which 150 are dedicated to viticulture. Here, you will find varieties such as the white Fernão Pires (the queen white grape of the Tagus wine region), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Arinto, Moscatel Graúdo, Alvarinho, and Viosinho; and the reds Castelão (the most representative red of the region), Pinot Noir, Trincadeira Preta, Alicante Bouschet, Merlot, Caladoc, Aragonez, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marselan, and Petit Verdot.
The estate also includes a parcel named Carvalhita, an old Castelão vineyard —of a very old clone of the variety— over 75 years old, very unique.
Another of the project’s highlights is the Paul da Gouxa, with 75% of this Natural Reserve under the management of Quinta da Atela.
In addition to a premium wine range —including the notable monovarietals Casa da Atela and the Aguardente Vínica Velhíssima Capela da Atela—, the company boasts one of the most luxurious wine tourism spaces in the region, offering unique experiences that combine wine culture with accommodation and event tourism. For all these reasons, Quinta da Atela was awarded the "Best Wine Tourism of the Tagus" in 2022.
Quinta da Lagoalva de Cima is a natural area of unique beauty that extends along the southern bank of the Tagus River, approximately 2 km from Alpiarça.
