PRESENTATION OF THE WINERY
Some of his contemporaries undoubtedly took António Alves Cálem for an incurable adventurer. In reality, it was his passion for entrepreneurship that really motivated him. When he founded Porto Cálem in 1859, he had already decided to cross the Atlantic and export to Brazil. This was at a time when Porto was usually shipped to the British Isles and other European markets. The beaten track was not for Cálem. As soon as he established a route to Brazil, his first transactions were in exotic woods. Again, this could have been judged as a bold move. In fact, it was a considered risk that opened the door to a highly successful business relationship. (1)
