Wine tourism by town in Málaga

The wine of the white villages of the Mediterranean.

If you come to Malaga for tourism or, specifically, in search of its wine, we inform you that here, in this province, you can find fourteen wineries to visit, spread across seven towns and villages, through which the route of Ronda and Malaga passes. Of these seven towns, if you are wondering which is the most important, we would say that it is clearly Ronda, not only because it has the highest concentration of wine tourism in the area, with eight wineries to visit, but also because it is one of the most important white villages in Spain, with an artistic heritage of great aesthetic beauty, which you are sure to enjoy as you stroll through its streets. The wines of Malaga date back to the time when the Greeks visited the peninsula and taught the locals how to prune the vines. From then on, a long tradition began that managed to survive the Muslim prohibition of alcohol, especially in Ronda, one of the most Moorish-influenced areas in southern Spain. When the Catholic monarchs arrived, they made a political gesture in this respect and created the famous Brotherhood of the Wine Merchants. This institution is the origin of a succession of wine regulatory bodies, with the aim of giving an identity to the wines of the area, which finally led to the recognition of two designations of origin: Malaga and Sierra de Malaga. Malaga wines are mainly liqueur wines and naturally sweet wines. The finos with designation of origin Sierra de Málaga are fruity white wines, with acid tones, and red wines with mineral and earthy aromas. The most important grape varieties are: muscatel, rome, petit verdot, tempranillo, garnacha, syrah and cabernet sauvignon. Within the wine-growing area of Malaga, the following regions can be distinguished: Axarquia (hillside), La Vega de Antequera (high plateau), Serrania de Ronda (high vineyards) and Guadalhorce valley (fertile areas). If you want to broaden your wine culture, come and visit the Malaga Wine Museum, located in a restored palace in the Plaza de los Viñeros.
