Tarragona wine, high wine culture.
- In Tarragona we can find 5 wineries to visit.
- 3 towns here have wineries.
Tarragona is a province that is simply at another level, both in terms of wine and in terms of activities for wine tourists. It is one of the provinces that think the most about you.
As there are several appellations of origin, we are going to list them very briefly, so that you get an overview of the area, without overwhelming you and only with the intention of giving you a first contact.
In this D.O., there is a predominance of white grapes; but if you are looking for red wine, in this case, the most frequent grape is Tempranillo. On the other hand, it is good to know that the wine cooperative movement here is very important.
You can also taste wines from the Penedés D.O., cradle of the birth of cava, after the great transformation that the Catalan vineyards underwent to overcome the phylloxera crisis in the 19th century.
In these lands, the first cooperative winery in Spain was founded in 1894. The term "wine cathedrals" was also born here. On the other hand, in the vineyards of Conca de Barberá, the Trepat grape, and the white Macabeo and Parellada grapes are used.
The D.O.Q. Priorat is another of the designations of origin that you can taste in the province of Tarragona. As you can see, the wine wealth is enormous. And if you come to visit the province and you are a winelover with a great desire for knowledge, this is really an appropriate area for you, for the enormous enocultural richness and its quality wine tourism.
In the Priorat area, the vineyards are distributed in terraces. There is one thing also characteristic of the place which is the presence of the 'llicorella', which is a type of slate that covers the vineyard. The best known and most common grapes of this wine are usually Cariñena and Garnacha negra. This area is also famous for having wines with the highest distinction, called Vi de la Finca.
Another less known appellation of origin and with 90% of the vineyard of red grapes is the D.O. Monsant, where, as a curious detail, we highlight the kosher wine, from the cooperative celler de Capçanes.
In the D.O. Terra Alta, you will be able to taste grapes such as white Grenache, very awarded, as well as Vi de la Finca.
In gastronomy, we are going to recommend the cassola de romesco.
The town par excellence with more wine tourism destinations is El Vendrel.
We are obliged to highlight the Tarragona Wine Festival, at the end of May, with thematic tastings, cinema, music and, of course, gastronomy and wine pairings, which being Catalonia, a real power in wine tourism, could not be missed.
