Somontano wine, strong, powerful and tenacious.
- In Huesca we can find 18 wineries to visit.
- 9 towns here have wineries.
Huesca belongs to the autonomous community of Aragon, and is built on a hill that is about 500 meters above sea level. On one of its flanks, meanders a small river, of great importance to them, and that is called the river Isuela. Here, in the Huesca Pyrenees, is the well-known Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, a protected natural area that can be visited by wine tourists who wish to take a break to reconnect with nature.
Those who have a predilection for wine tourism through wine routes will be pleased to know that the Somontano wine route runs through here. In fact, at the beginning of August the wine festival dedicated to this appellation of origin is usually held, and where the gastronomy of Alto Aragon is washed down with Somontano wines.
Its most important locality from an enotouristic point of view is Barbastro, since there we find a high concentration of wineries to visit, amounting to 9.
Although the history of this wine dates back to the Middle Ages, historians usually recognize the great impulse given by the Lalane family, who fleeing from phylloxera in Bordeaux, decided to settle in Huesca and experiment with a wine made from French grapes. In addition, in the sixties, the Somontano del Sobrarbe cooperative was established in the region, and this gave a lot of commercial strength to the wine of the area. If you dare to visit these wineries, we inform you that they also have a museum, so the visit can be quite round, especially if you are a person interested in expanding your wine culture.
However, if you prefer to visit an es-pec-ta-cu-lar winery, do not hesitate and go to Sommos, its architectural design does not usually disappoint.
Here in Huesca there is also a developed rural wine tourism, that is, if you want to visit a winery and then stay overnight in it or near the area, Huesca offers this plus, unlike other areas of Spain. An example of this is the Sers winery, which in addition to making a green pruning that they will explain to you during your visits, also offers you the possibility of sleeping in their winery.
For literature lovers, Monte Odina has something to offer in this regard. But if what you like is to eat well, we recommend Bodegas Enate.
A small note about its gastronomy: very typical dishes of Huesca are abadejo ajoarriero and buñuelos de bacalao (cod fritters). For dessert, we recommend the refollau and the suspiros de monja.
The celebration in honor of the patron saint of Huesca, San Lorenzo, is the most important festival of this province, and generally takes place from August 9 to 15. These festivities, called Fiestas de San Lorenzo, have been declared festivities of national interest, so if you visit the area around this time, you would do well to stop by.
