Wine tourism by town in Alicante

Sun and beach, summer nights with good wine.

If you come to Alicante, to enjoy its sun, its beaches, and also, it gives you a day to visit some of its 18 wineries with wine tourism, you should know that the Alicante wine route passes through here, and covers 12 towns, among which Villena and Pinoso are the most important. In Alicante, there are two main wine areas: La Marina and Vinalopó. In the first one, you will find red wines, from Monastrell grape; in the second one, sweet and white wines, with predominance of Muscatel grape. Do not forget that here there is a very characteristic wine called Fondillón wine, very typical of the area, and that wine gourmets will be delighted to taste. Regarding the history of wine in this area, here is the site of Benimaqua de Denia, one of the oldest wine presses in Europe. Later, we find references to this nectar in the Arab poets who settled here, but there is no documentary record of wine as an activity until the 15th century. The autochthonous wine was always protected by the laws of Ferdinand the Catholic because it was exported to Europe. It is also worth mentioning the creation of the first oenological station in Spain, in the late 19th century, in Cocentaina, to fight against phylloxera. During this period when the French vineyard was destroyed, they signed a wine export treaty with this country that almost made the province gold, however, when it was rescinded, it suffered from the restructuring of the vineyard. For wine tourists also fond of nature, we recommend visiting the island of Tabarca. The most important festival in Alicante is undoubtedly La Hoguera de San Juan, celebrated at the end of June, which has been declared of international tourist interest.
