Ribera del Guadiana Wine Route passes through the following provinces : Badajoz, with 19 wineries, Cáceres, with 4 winerie and Cuenca, with one winery.
The Guadiana river bank is subdivided into 6 geologically very heterogeneous regions and, perhaps for this reason, its appellation of origin has 29 authorized types of grapes. Tierra de Barros is precisely the core of the D.O., one of the largest areas, with an extremely hot dry climate. As in other parts of Spain, archaeological remains of Roman Empire wine have been found in Mérida, especially in the areas of La Serena, La Vera and Medellín. The wines of Guadiana had a period of splendor in the XVI and XVII centuries, since the white wines were highly appreciated by the Spanish monarchy of the time and were also exported to the colonies. Hernán Cortés himself or Pizarro spread these wines from Extremadura in America and planted Extremadura vines there. Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, one of the most important writers of this time, anchored in the former colonies, tells us how the Indians were given to taste the wine when the broth began to reach the other side. And, of course, the wonderful Cervantes, also mentions the wines of Extremadura in the Licentiate Vidriera. Guadiana wines have undergone a great modernization in the last 50 years, and the denomination of origin has authorized the cultivation of 17 types of white grapes and 12 varieties of red grapes. Although the predominance in the case of red grapes is the Tempranillo grape, as in other wine-growing areas of the peninsula. This grape variety allows the creation of very original wines, very genuine, very personal if you will, within which, the most reputable are those of Tierras de Barros.
