Of medieval origin, this appellation of origin was born as a license to certain jurisdictions to produce wine in the Toledo area, in exchange for having carried out the repopulation of lands during the reconquest. The high point of these wines in modern history took place during the reign of the Habsburgs, who were good consumers of wine from this area. However, the DO as such was not made official until 1976.
With a continental climate, hot summers and cold winters, the soils of this vineyard are clearly differentiated into two zones: north and south. The northern zone, smaller, is a mountainous area, surrounded by holm oaks and junipers, whose siliceous, calcareous soils, in granitic areas with the presence of quartz, give rise to very fresh and floral wines. The southern zone, on the other hand, comes from the old cultivation of cereals, and its soils are poor in calcium, sandy, acidic, which give rise to fine, soft and aromatic wines.
The grape variety par excellence is Garnacha, although in recent times other varieties such as Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah or Cabernet have been introduced.
On this route, you will find centenary barrels located in cellars and natural caves.
