A jewel in the heart of the Biosphere Reserve, on the Way of St. James.
INTRODUCTION TO THE WINERY
Our winery is situated along the Camino de Santiago, right in the heart of a Biosphere Reserve. Located in the municipality of Morga, in the heart of Bizkaia, it offers the perfect setting to enjoy the lush green landscapes shaped by the Atlantic climate in our region.
Surrounded by trees and gentle mountains, it is also a starting point for easy hiking routes accessible to everyone and ideal for families, such as the ascent to Bizkargi or Arburu. It’s a special place to spend a day immersed in gastronomy, wine culture, and nature.
HISTORY
The winery was built in 2011 at the request of the members of the cooperative then known as Bodega Talleri. This cooperative was the first of its kind for txakoli producers in Bizkaia and was created with the goal of collaboratively producing a superior-quality product. From this unity and shared effort, **Bitxia** (meaning "jewel" in Basque) txakoli was born. Today, the cooperative has evolved into a company run by three partners and renamed **Talleri Berria Upategia eta Mahastiak**.
ARCHITECTURE
The winery’s construction was guided by two main aesthetic principles: luminosity and transparency, achieved through glass enclosures, and harmony with the natural surroundings, exemplified by a curved roof designed to integrate seamlessly into the landscape of mountains and streams.
This distinctive curved roof, reminiscent of a tile, is one of the building’s most iconic features and also inspired the winery’s name. “Talleri” means tile in Basque.
By choosing this roof design, the winery pays homage to the old tile factory that once stood here over 50 years ago. This tile factory was built around 1930 by Pedro Bilbao, a native of Morga, and produced tiles and bricks made from clay sourced from the land itself.
WINE TOURISM
When you visit the winery, we will guide you through the entire winemaking process—from the arrival of the grapes after harvest to bottling, labeling, and final packaging. After the tour, if the weather permits, you can relax on our large terrace under the overhanging roof, with stunning views of the mountains and vineyards. There, you can savor our txakolis along with other culinary delights.
Our winery is open to visitors year-round. We regularly organize various activities and events, such as pairing tastings, wine-tasting courses, or vineyard picnics, among others.
