Wine tourism by town in Burgos

Blood sausage and Burgos cheese with Tinta del País.

In Burgos, there are 44 wineries that can be visited. Most of them belong to two very famous wine routes, such as the Ribera del Duero and Arlanza routes; in both, the predominant or most frequently used grape variety is Tempranillo, also known in these parts as Tinta del País. In Burgos, there are three appellations of origin: Ribera del Duero, Arlanza, and Rioja (Bodega El Ternero, in Miranda del Duero). The most important wine tourism destinations in Burgos are Aranda del Duero and Gumiel de Izán. However, you can find other towns that also contribute to this culture, for example, the town of Sotillo de la Ribera, which celebrates every year a fair dedicated to the world of wine, and in which they organize horse races through the subway galleries of the hill of San Jorge. In addition, in this same fair, you can also attend a contest of "cubillo" wines, an activity that can be very attractive for those interested in homemade wines. There is also another important wine festival in San Lesmes, with wine tastings accompanied by chorizo and black pudding from Burgos. If you also want to combine your love of wine with culturally enriching activities, there are two points of great tourist interest in this province. The first is the gothic cathedral of Burgos, a World Heritage Site, and the second is the museum of human evolution in Atapuerca. Both are essential tourist destinations in this province of Castilla y León. As for the gastronomy of Burgos, apart from its famous black pudding and Burgos cheese, the dishes of beans or caparrones, the Castilian soup and roast lamb in the Ribera and Aranda del Duero are also well known. If you like lamb, you are in the right place, because the lamb from Burgos has a protected geographical indication. But the most famous dish of the place, collected in Spanish literature, is the olla podrida (rotten pot). In addition to wine, there is another typical local drink, zurracapote. For dessert, yemas de Burgos.
